The White House disclosed the start of government employee terminations on Friday, following through on prior threats linked to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Formal Statement and Initial Details

Russell Vought posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” indicating the official process for terminating staff.

Although Vought provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that notices had been issued within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS representative indicated that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization for federal workers announced that members at the Department of Education would be impacted by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Court Actions

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on public services relied upon by the public and pledged to contest the actions in court.

“It is disgraceful that the government has used the government shutdown as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide essential functions to communities across the country,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the announcement, declaring, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved before then.

At a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, Mike Johnson, criticized opposition lawmakers for not supporting the GOP bill, which passed in the House on a near party-line vote.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and end the shutdown,” the speaker stated. Beginning shortly, military personnel, who often live paycheck to paycheck, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Judicial and Practical Limits

Last week, unions sought a court injunction to block the administration from carrying out any layoffs during the shutdown. Additionally, a court official ordered the government to disclose details on layoff plans, affected agencies, and if any government staff had been brought back to execute layoffs.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the ability of the government to conduct terminations, citing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been initiated before the shutdown began.

Consequences for Employees

The layoffs occurred on the very day that federal workers received only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since appropriations expired at the start of the month.

A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the political stalemate’s effect on government workers.

“It is wrong to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the White House have failed to keep our government open and operational,” Stier stated. “Our flight regulators, VA nurses, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not responsible for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are continuing to be paid amid the shutdown.
